GOODS & SERVICES TAX (GST)

We have been recognised experts in this field since the early 90s, being around the time we released our highly regarded GST Guide (a 78 page book which sold around 3,000 copies).

The director of Max Warlow & Associates Pty Ltd is Max Warlow who has conducted over 350 seminars on the GST.

Individual particulars relating to Max Warlow are available at the Main Menu.

These GST seminars have ranged from industry specific to internal training for accountants, to seminars for accountants and their clients, including a recently completed series of Government seminars on compilation of BAS for the not-for-profit, voluntary and cultural sectors and How to Survive a GST Audit.

There are a number of issues accountants need to be aware of concerning GST, some of these being:

a. The enormous difficulty in being up-to-date on all matters. Given the passage of time, and of course the enormous drain on your resources concerning other tax reform matters, it is virtually impossible to be able to be up-to-date.

b. Those accountants who have undertaken completing BAS for their clients will recognise from overseas experience that this activity will dramatically decline and therefore should not be relied upon as an on going source of income.

c. Contractual disputes between suppliers and their customers over entitlements or otherwise to impose GST will be numerous, with some businesses failing due to inadequate safety provisions. Make no mistake, this is a suppliers tax not a consumers tax. If a supplier gets it wrong and fails to recover GST from his customer, he is still liable to the ATO. Businesses who find themselves in this unfortunate situation will examine the circumstances which caused this to happen. Hopefully, they will not find inadequate advice, or a lack of action by their accountant as the cause!

d. There are some clients who simply never accept the advice of their accountants. Let us be the "messenger" and remove the "kill the messenger" risk from yourself.

e. Clients who blame their accountant if as a consequence of an ATO GST Audit a problem arises.
